As you get ready to take the OAT, you may want to utilize the practice tests and test modules that are available for all examinees. These modules feature questions written by actual OAT test constructors to give you a sense of what to expect on the OAT. Questions mirror the test specifications and are formatted as you will find them on the actual test.

- Biology 201
- Organic Chemistry 201
- General Chemistry 201
- Reading Comprehension 201
- Quantitative Reasoning 201
- Physics 201
The full practice test has an allotted time of 3 hours and 35 minutes, divided into timed sections to help simulate the time constraints of the actual test. This test does not allow for a break. Once you click “Begin Test,” you must take the practice test in the allotted time. Once you have purchased the test, you will have 24 hours to complete it. When the time expires, the test will end, even if you are taking the test at that time.
The OAT Program does not endorse any test preparation courses and has no data on the content or efficacy of test preparation courses designed to prepare examinees to take the OAT.
The OAT Program urges individuals considering participating in test preparation courses to review carefully the course materials to ensure that they reflect the current content of the OAT.
If you prefer not to take the full practice test, you can opt to take one or more test modules for $20 each. These individual modules are identical to the six modules in the full practice test. Each module must be taken within 24 hours of purchase. When the time expires, the test will end even if you are taking the test at that time.

Checklist and must know tips before you submit your application
Begin by reading the official OAT Candidate Guide (PDF). Note that you will be required to confirm that you’ve reviewed this material and agree to the rules and regulations stated in the guide.
Keep in mind that testing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. There are no exceptions. Your credit or debit card will be charged when you submit your test application.
Register for your unique OAT personal identification number (PIN). Be sure to enter your name as it appears on your official government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. On test day, the name on your ID must exactly match your OAT application or you will be denied admission and forfeit your testing fee.
Choose which optometry schools will receive your OAT scores. Note that when you sign up for the OAT, you can designate as many optometry programs as you like to receive your scores at no extra charge. (Additional schools can be added later, but a fee will apply. The Department of Testing Services recommends that you request scores be sent to all schools to avoid additional costs.) The list of optometry programs you choose to receive your scores will appear on your OAT confirmation email. You can also log in later to view the schools you selected.
The Department of Testing Services (DTS) will process your application and send you an email notification with eligibility information and instructions for appointment scheduling. Didn’t get your notice? Please check your spam folder before contacting DTS at 1.800.232.1694 or oatexam@ada.org.
The OAT program provides reasonable and appropriate testing accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. These accommodations occur for individuals with documented disabilities or medical conditions who demonstrate a need for accommodation, request an accommodation prior to testing, and who are approved. All testing accommodation requests must be submitted electronically by signing in with your PIN and password. Please refer to the OAT Candidate Guide (PDF) for more information about the procedure for submitting a request for testing accommodations, including acceptable forms of documentation.
Confirm your eligibility before scheduling your test. Before you can schedule your test, you must receive eligibility confirmation from the Department of Testing Services. This confirmation will arrive via email. Please check your spam folder before contacting the Department of Testing Services for assistance.
