Checklist and tips for OAT applicants

Begin by reading the official OAT Candidate Guide (PDF). Note that you will be required to confirm that you’ve reviewed this material and agree to the rules and regulations stated in the guide.

Keep in mind that testing fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. There are no exceptions. Your credit or debit card will be charged when you submit your test application.

Register for your unique OAT personal identification number (PIN). Be sure to enter your name as it appears on your official government-issued identification, such as a driver’s license or passport. On test day, the name on your ID must exactly match your OAT application or you will be denied admission and forfeit your testing fee.

Choose which optometry schools will receive your OAT scores. Note that when you sign up for the OAT, you can designate as many optometry programs as you like to receive your scores at no extra charge. (Additional schools can be added later, but a fee will apply. The Department of Testing Services recommends that you request scores be sent to all schools to avoid additional costs.) The list of optometry programs you choose to receive your scores will appear on your OAT confirmation email. You can also log in later to view the schools you selected.

The Department of Testing Services (DTS) will process your application and send you an email notification with eligibility information and instructions for appointment scheduling. Didn’t get your notice? Please check your spam folder before contacting DTS at 1.800.232.1694 or oatexam@ada.org.

The OAT program provides reasonable and appropriate testing accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. These accommodations occur for individuals with documented disabilities or medical conditions who demonstrate a need for accommodation, request an accommodation prior to testing, and who are approved.  All testing accommodation requests must be submitted electronically by signing in with your PIN and password. Any testing accommodation request(s) that was submitted via email before April 8, 2024, will still be accepted, and reviewed per the process at the time of submission.
